On June 9, a public lecture entitled "Let's Walk and Learn! Petrology Series (2) Tojinbo" was held with 27 participants ranging from junior high school students to those in their 70s.
Guided by Professor
Tomoaki Morishita, Institute of Science and Engineering Faculty of Geosciences and Civil Engineering, the students observed the rocks around Tojinbo, paying attention to the color and direction of the characteristic stripe patterns that are often seen on the rocks around the coastline.
The lecturer explained the structure of these columnar joints, and the students imagined the formation process of the columnar joints with inferences.
Students commented that "the lecture was valuable for understanding the Noto Peninsula earthquake," and "the lecturer himself was frank about what he did not understand and what questions he had, and there were many opportunities to think for oneself, which created a good learning atmosphere."
Scientific discussions were interspersed with imaginative thinking, and provided an opportunity to consider the "unanswerable question" of how Tojinbo, a national natural monument, and the Japanese archipelago came to be.
