Articulation Center for High School and University held a hybrid in-person and online reading seminar on March 25th, 27th, and 29th, with a total of 12 high school students participating.
In this seminar, participants will share their reading experience with a new book or a collection of books written for high school students (or that they would like high school students to think about) and that have been the topic of discussion in recent years. This time, three books were selected: "Digitalizing Emerging Economies" by Asei Ito, "A 100,000-year History of Humanity and Climate" by Takeshi Nakagawa, and "The Power of Nursing" by Midori Kawashima.
The participants read the book in advance, worked on the assigned tasks such as the author's aim and points they did not understand, and then exchanged opinions and wrote an introduction on the day. Based on the opinions that came up in the first half of the discussion, the participants wrote the introduction while imagining what kind of person would pick up the book and thinking about how to express the book's appeal.
Participants commented, "It was very meaningful that I could notice things that I could not grasp just by reading and ideas that did not occur to me," "Most of the classes in high school were in the form of one-way explanations by the teacher, so it was refreshing to experience an opportunity to exchange opinions like this," and "I am not very good at Japanese and was very anxious about writing introductions, but with the help of the participants and the teacher, I was able to write a very good introduction.
