Contributing to Society through "Future-oriented Intelligence," Built on an "All Kanazawa University" Approach
????????About a year has passed since I was appointed as President of Kanazawa University in April 2022 and I announced Future Vision of Kanazawa University: Kokorozashi (aspirations) in May. Kokorozashi is a clear statement of our unwavering vision for the future, that is to contribute to society through “future-oriented intelligence” built on an “all Kanazawa University” approach. This is based on our philosophy, as stated in the Charter of Kanazawa University, of being “a research university dedicated to education, while opening up its doors to both local and global society.” In Kokorozashi, we have declared three respective aspirations for research, education, and administration—to establish ourselves as a global research base, produce core leaders of society, as “Kanazawa University graduates,” and realize sustainable and autonomous administration—and set 27 missions and individual action plans. We will strive to realize Kokorozashi with an “all Kanazawa University” approach, in which students, faculty, and staff transcend their respective positions and work together with mutual respect.
On the research front, under the Interfaculty Institute for Frontier Science, we are engaging in a variety of initiatives to accelerate our contribution to society through future-oriented intelligence with basic, applied, and empirical research. Specifically, in 2022, we created the Institute for the Study of Ancient Civilizations and Cultural Resources, which aims to establish a new type of archeology that integrates the arts, science, and medicine. Further, in 2023, the Biomass Green Innovation Center, a new center for industry-academia collaborative research, will begin full-scale operations. We will also establish the Experimental Research Center for Envisioning the Future, the engine for the promotion of empirical research, with the campus as its showcase.
In terms of education, we are promoting the development of an educational environment that realizes learner-oriented education (fostering human resources who can learn and develop on their own) under the "Education for the Future" concept. Graduate school reform, one of our most important missions, is also underway. In addition to the existing high school-university graduate school connection program, we are expanding support for the development of doctoral human resources and young researchers to create a consistent educational model from pre-university to young researcher. As a foundation for this, Kanazawa University's "Global Standards" (Kanazawa University Global Standards) have been adopted for graduate school education as well. KUGS) based on a fusion of the humanities and sciences. STEAM Education has been expanded. In addition, after receiving a doctoral degree from the University Promising researcher A new system will also be introduced for starting up as a researcher as The School of Tourism Design will be established in the Interdisciplinary Academic Field, which promotes the fusion of the humanities and sciences, for 2022. 4 The company was established in April and will be further established this year. 4 In April, we established the "Smart Creation Science" department.
On the management side, in 2022, Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology was selected for the National University Management Reform Promotion Project. As a result, a foundation is being built to strongly promote investment in human resources and promotion of projects toward the ideal Kanazawa University. In addition, under the coordination of the Hokuriku Economic Federation, the four national universities in the Hokuriku region, including Kanazawa University, will further enhance the "Hokuriku Future Co-Creation Forum" under their joint management. Through this organization, we will accelerate open innovation through industry-academia-government collaboration.
2023 will be a year of further progress of new lifestyle patterns for the post-COVID era, with the aims of the recovery and balance of past social and economic activities. We will need to make a renewed push for links between Kanazawa University and the world, including sending our students to study abroad and accepting international students from overseas, after these programs were affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Serious problems continue to build up around the world, including global environmental issues and conflicts. Under Kokorozashi, our unwavering vision for the future, we will promote the development of core leaders of society, recognized as “Kanazawa University graduates.” Moreover, through world-class research developments, we will create innovation from Kanazawa University and further promote our contribution to society through future-oriented intelligence with and “all Kanazawa University” approach.
I hope that you will continue to extend your kind support and cooperation to Kanazawa University.
